| + | Referring to the royalist attack on Tadcaster in Dec 1642, Fairfax ((//The Fairfax Correspondence (Volume 2); Memoirs of the Reign of Charles the First//, G W Johnson, R.Bentley London 1848)) mentions two regiments involved in the assault as the black regiment and the red regiment. Possibly this is in reference to coat colours, but more likely refers to flag colours. Those regiments were Conyers' and another described as Newcastle's 'life guard'. Therefore Conyers' may have carried black flags, as the [[royalist:foot-regiments:marquis-of-newcastle|Marquis of Newcastle's Regiment of Foot]] perhaps carried red flags. This appears to be the most likely interpretation but its quite possible this was the other way around. | ||
